Summary

I was a god, once。 Until I was cast out by my father, Zeus。

Now I'm an awkward mortal teenager named Lester, bound to a difficult and dangerous demigod called Meg。

Thanks a lot, dad。

My way out? A series of scary and dangerous trials, of course。

For my third mission, I must:

Journey through the Labyrinth to free an Oracle who only speaks in puzzles。

Defeat a vicious and bloodthirsty Roman Emperor - the most vicious of three very vicious and bloodthirsty Roman Emperors。

Is that all? No, I've to do everything without any of my godly powers。 Wonderful。 Looks like I'll be needing all the help I can get。 From new friends, and old 。 。 。

Whatever happens, when you get back to Olympus, when you’re a god again, remember。 Remember what it’s like to be human。I don't know how to rate this third installment of The Trials of Apollo。 I don't know what to write about it。 I don't know anything anymore。On one hand, it's another Rick Riordan book about Greek mythology, an author whose writing and storylines and characters I've been loving for more than a decade。I've read all of his mythology books and I've been able to find things that I en Whatever happens, when you get back to Olympus, when you’re a god again, remember。 Remember what it’s like to be human。I don't know how to rate this third installment of The Trials of Apollo。 I don't know what to write about it。 I don't know anything anymore。On one hand, it's another Rick Riordan book about Greek mythology, an author whose writing and storylines and characters I've been loving for more than a decade。I've read all of his mythology books and I've been able to find things that I enjoyed in them no matter how old I was when reading them。 The Burning Maze should have been right up my alley。 Humans are more than the sum of your history。 You can choose how much of your ancestry to embrace。 You can overcome the expectations of your family and your society。 What you cannot do, and should never do, is try to be someone other than yourself。 On the other hand, and I'll be completely honest with you, there's not much I liked about this book —I mean, it took me a year and a half to painstakingly get through it。What I disliked:- Apollo, his humour, his "voice", his thoughts, his total lack of redeeming qualities- the awful pacing and the empty storyline: the characters kept driving around and then going back to the Citern? Nothing much happened during the first half of the book and even though I kind of liked the ending, I expected this book to be called The Burning Maze for a reason?? And we barely spent a minute in the Labyrinth。。。- the writing: the forced banter, the way too numerous pop culture references, the lack of both humour and tension I had witnessed tens of thousands of mortal deaths。 Few of them had any meaning。 Most were untimely, unexpected, undignified, and at least slightly embarrassing。 The people who deserved to die took forever to do so。 Those who deserved to live always went too soon。 - obviously, (view spoiler)[ Jason's death, which felt completely useless and anti-climatic: even though I'd been spoiled a while ago and knew what would happen, I felt absolutely nothing (hide spoiler)]- the fact that every single HoO member was so out of character? Jason and Piper not being themselves, Leo showing up at the worst possible momentWhat I liked:- Grover being Grover, a protector and a (somewhat cool) Lord of the Wild “Oh, Latin!” Grover said。 “Hold on。 I can do this。” He squinted at the words, then sighed。 “No。 I can’t。” - the fact that they didn't defeat Caligula at the end of the book, which I l o v e d, because it finally felt like there was a real, smart and cunning villain in this saga 。。。more

REALLY glad I decided to do a series reread before continuing with the Trials of Apollo, because man does everything hit harder when it’s fresh in your mind。 I respect this book a lot for having stronger villains than usual - not that anyone comes close to Luke Castellan, but they’re starting to get more layered。

After all, Jason went through, my heart just broke when he died。 I literally refuse to believe he's dead。 He never got back with Piper, never finished his god project。 He just had a normal life。 He never saw Leo again or Thalia。 He defeated Gaea, but NOOO, he doesn't get a happy ending。 Man, if he doesn't come back, this is going to be one of the biggest deaths that broke me in fictional books。 HOW COULD HE KILL OF ONE OF THE SEVEN? Impossible to put down。 Rick Riordan outdoes himself compared to the first two books in the Trials of Apollo series。 The character growth and increased intensity of the plot are satisfying and engaging。 The Burning Maze holds no punches against your emotions after getting you emotionally invested in the characters。 The ending is bittersweet in the best way, I can't wait to get my hands on ToA #4。 Impossible to put down。 Rick Riordan outdoes himself compared to the first two books in the Trials of Apollo series。 The character growth and increased intensity of the plot are satisfying and engaging。 The Burning Maze holds no punches against your emotions after getting you emotionally invested in the characters。 The ending is bittersweet in the best way, I can't wait to get my hands on ToA #4。 。。。more

。。。more

This was by far my favorite in the series so far。 Where the Dark Prophecy felt lethargic despite the non-stop adventuring, this book had great pacing and kept me intrigued the entire time。 I was somewhat surprised by this last fact, considering I've known a major spoiler for this book since it came out three years ago。 Even though I thought I knew how I might react to certain events, I felt the full effects through Apollo's thoughts as well as the reactions of the surrounding characters。 Though This was by far my favorite in the series so far。 Where the Dark Prophecy felt lethargic despite the non-stop adventuring, this book had great pacing and kept me intrigued the entire time。 I was somewhat surprised by this last fact, considering I've known a major spoiler for this book since it came out three years ago。 Even though I thought I knew how I might react to certain events, I felt the full effects through Apollo's thoughts as well as the reactions of the surrounding characters。 Though it's due to tragic events, I'm happy to see Apollo starting to take more responsibility for things, and to see that he's willing and ready to remember what his human experience has been like。 Will this be the PJO series where the gods actually start to care??? Probably not。 But if we can get Apollo on that train, anything is possible。 。。。more
